Imagine that you just stepped on a scale for the first time after a pandemic-long exercise hiatus. In this scenario, you might be shocked to see that the number on the scale has increased more than you ever expected. That wouldn’t be a fun experience – but I, like many others, have actually felt that blow to the gut.
According to a recent study, millenials who gained weight during the pandemic averaged an increase of 41lbs. If that sounds like you, remember that you’re not alone in trying to shed unwanted pounds. But what can you do about it?
Thankfully, there’s an easy, thoughtful, and literally life-changing way to drop the weight and live a less stressful, healthier lifestyle – it’s Noom.
What’s Special About Noom?
Thanks to Noom, I’ve learned that some of the major problems in my battle to maintain a healthy weight are the food thought distortions that I’ve acquired throughout my life. What’s a thought distortion? Noom explains all of this and so much more. But for instance, thought distortions are telling yourself things like:
- “Carbs are bad.”
- “Eating six meals a day will speed up my metabolism.”
- “Eat every bite on your plate; you should never waste food!”
Believe it or not, those examples are untrue – and those thought distortions, among many others, are incredibly detrimental. But Noom helped me defeat these thoughts distortions. Keep in mind, however, that thought distortions are just one of the many obstacles Noom will help you overcome.
Think of Noom as a psychological and emotional toolbox for weight loss, that will change the way you think about losing weight and uncover real, effective, and sustainable ways to lose excess weight and keep it off.
Does Noom Work? How?
So far, Noom’s psychological approach to weight loss has allowed me to shed 32.5% of the weight I gained over the pandemic. But, the journey isn’t over yet. So, why does Noom’s approach work? Noom has the power to give you a whole new outlook on food, exercise, people, and life.
Yes, unfortunately, many of the perceptions we’ve held about food, exercise, and social situations involving food are likely wrong – and Noom’s easy-to-learn courses are life-changing. I won’t spoil all of the surprises; you can learn about all of these wonderful tricks with a free Noom trial.
What’s Noom’s ‘Psychological Approach?’
The company does an excellent job of explaining what makes Noom great, so I won’t try to paraphrase. Instead, here are a few quotes directly from the company that perfectly describe what makes the service different from fad diets that just don’t work. I’ll also provide my personal take.
Psychology
“Our products are developed using evidence-based approaches and scientifically-proven principles, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help people build sustainable habits that last a lifetime.”
Noom
My Take: Noom’s research and analysis of weight-loss research is impressive in breadth and depth. Noom makes weight-loss research easy to understand and apply to your life. Using Noom feels like you’re working with a true professional to understand your food, your body, and how all of the pieces fit together to get you to a healthier weight.
Technology
“We’re constantly innovating and fine-tuning our products to ensure our users have access to the most effective healthcare tools in the market.”
Noom
My Take: Noom’s app is user-friendly, lighthearted, and features many exciting tools like food logging (similar to MyFitnessPal, but without the ads), exercise tracking, and daily courses. The Noom app even provides a weight graph to track your progress with a projection date (based on your data) for when you’ll meet your goal weight.
Noom is a nifty app that makes learning about weight loss and tracking progress easy (and maybe even fun). Many of the classes are even voice-recorded so that you can listen to your courses like an audiobook. It’s a simple example of how Noom makes it uncomplicated to work learning about weight loss into your day.
Human Coaching
Noom users are matched with one of our thousands of trained coaches to help guide them along their health journeys and provide the support needed to achieve their goals.
Noom
My Take: Noom utilizes a community-like approach that will put you into a group of real users just like you. There, you can share updates on progress and answer specific prompts that bring users together and will cultivate support from strangers on the same journey. Not only that but you’ll also be matched with a real human coach who will give you feedback, sometimes immediately. You can ask your coach things like, “Am I on track? Or should I have lost more weight by now?” They’ll answer with a personalized response like “Everyone loses weight differently! However, we encourage our users to aim to lose around .5 to 2lbs a week. With that said, you’re right on track! Great work!”
What Else Does Noom Do?
If you log your food through Noom, you’ll see a neat food analysis page, that breaks down the types of food you’ve consumed in a traffic light style. The app explains how all of this works, but here’s a synopsis:
- Green foods: You can eat a lot of green foods. These are vegetables and fruits and other low-caloric density foods.
- Yellow foods: You’ll want to eat yellow foods with a bit of caution. These are foods that are a bit more calorically dense, but you can still enjoy them each day.
- Red foods: Red foods are definitely not off-limits, but these are foods you’ll want to keep a close eye on. Think big portions of red meat or desserts. Yes, you can still enjoy these! But Noom will help you manage your intake of red foods for success.
Noom even offers other benefits as add-ons like Custom Meal and Workout Plans. Noom is a subscription service that offers a free trial – and custom meal and workout plans do cost extra. But even if you’re not interested in paying more, Noom offers a bunch of healthy recipes for free that will fit into your plan, allowing you to make food at home that complies with the facts and ideas you’ve learned throughout the program.
Final Thoughts on Noom
Noom has the potential to change your life. It teaches you new ways of thinking about food, exercise, and the people around you. Noom gives you the tools to make balanced and effective choices that you might not have ever considered before.
Its many courses are thoughtful and evidence-based – and there are a ton of them. Even after nearly two months, I’m just halfway through the program and have so much left to discover. That’s not an overwhelming feeling though, I’m excited to learn all that Noom has left to teach me, and it keeps me feeling energized and motivated to continue working to reach my goal.
If you’re interested in losing unwanted weight, Noom is a powerful and comprehensive tool that you won’t regret trying. Luckily, Noom is offering iDrop News readers a free trial. If you don’t like it, cancel it. It’s that easy. However, I have nothing but positive things to write about Noom. The results speak for themselves, and you’ll be so happy that you finally gave Noom a shot. You deserve it.
