Three new iPhones are coming this year: the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone 9. And all three devices are coming sooner than later. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming handsets.

Unlike last year, Apple is largely expected to unveil two new premium OLED devices: the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.

Both devices share a similar design and aesthetic to last year’s iPhone X with an edge-to-edge display, slim bezels, and no Home button. The iPhone XS, essentially, is rumored to be an evolution of the 2017 flagship. It’ll sport a 5.8-inch OLED display and essentially the same form factor as the iPhone X.

But the big news this year is the iPhone XS Max. The device applies the iPhone X design to a larger-bodied phone, packing a massive 6.5-inch OLED display into a similar footprint as past Plus devices.

iPhone XS Release Date

It’s incredibly likely that Apple will unveil the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max at its Gather Round event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

If Apple’s release timeline is similar to last year, that means the devices will become available to preorder next Friday, Sept. 14. They’ll ship out to consumers and hit store shelves the following Friday, Sept. 21.

iPhone XS Price

The iPhone XS, being a direct successor to the iPhone X, is expected to share a lot of similarities with its predecessor. With one exception: price.

With a starting price point of $799 to $899 for the 64-gigabyte model, the iPhone XS will be about $100 to $200 cheaper than the device it replaces.

Based on a $799 retail price, the 256GB could go for $949, while the only variant that would break the $1,000 price tier is the massive 512GB iPhone XS at $1,099.

The larger iPhone XS Max is expected to overtake the iPhone X’s price tier, starting at $999 for the 64GB model. The 256GB variant might cost $1,149, while the 512GB variant will run customers $1,299.

iPhone XS Specs and Features

  • The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will both run on Apple’s proprietary, next-generation A12 chip. While this was rumored to be an “S” year for Apple, the new silicon will likely bring some significant performance updates to the iPhone lineup.
  • Apple’s A12 will probably be its most powerful chip yet. That’s not a stretch to predict. But it could allow for a range of capabilities that have yet to be seen in most current smartphones.
  • Both OLED models are also expected to feature 4GB of RAM, upgraded camera specifications, better graphics processors, and possibly longer battery life.
  • Like last year’s models, the iPhone XS lineup will probably sport Apple’s advanced TrueDepth Camera, Face ID and gesture-based controls. They might feature increased water-resistance, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
  • Both iPhone XS variants will presumably come with Qi-based wireless charging, which will be compatible with Apple’s AirPower charging mat. In the box, a new Lightning to USB-C cable and a redesigned 18W power brick that will allow for fast-charging are both likely options.
  • Possible dual-SIM support for the larger OLED device has been hinted at, but it’s likely to vary depending on the market.

iPhone XS Color Options

Like Apple’s previous premium smartphones, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will likely be available in the standard Space Grey and White color options.

But there could be a third option for consumers this year: gold.

Both OLED handsets come in a new, attractive gold finish. Originally rumored for last year’s iPhone X, the new color option is basically confirmed to make an appearance this year (and was even hinted at in press releases for this event).

Where to Buy iPhone XS

As with past lineups, both OLED handsets will likely be available at brick-and-mortar Apple Store locations and at various carriers and third-party retailers across the globe. You’ll also be able to preorder and purchase both devices from Apple’s online site and Apple Store app.
