M5 MacBook Pro: What We Know So Far

Toggle Dark Mode
It’s only been a few months since Apple refreshed its MacBook Pro models with a small upgrade in October to ensure these computers ran on Apple’s most powerful M-series chip yet.
Now that 2025 is here, Apple is already planning to release a brand new MacBook Pro — or at least, that’s what the rumors say. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like MacBook Pro fans can expect a big update this year either.
Still, that doesn’t mean that the 2025 MacBook Pro models won’t have a couple of changes worth mentioning. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming M5 MacBook Pro lineup.
M5 MacBook Pro: Don’t Expect Any Big Changes in the Design
As we mentioned earlier, Apple doesn’t plan to give us a massive change in the new MacBook Pro models.
If rumors are true, the M5 MacBook Pro models will look exactly the same as the current generation, which already has the same design as the previous three generations.
That means the design, the keyboard, and the display will all be the same. Some rumors hinted that Apple might use an OLED display on the 2025 MacBook Pro, but it seems that won’t happen. Instead, Apple may use these new displays for the 2026 models.
M5 MacBook Pro: The New Features That Are (Most Likely) Coming
Instead of focusing on any design changes, Apple will most likely only focus on upgrading the internals of this year’s MacBook Pro.
As you can expect, we’ll see the introduction of the more powerful M5 chip, making the new computer the most powerful MacBook we’ve seen. But how powerful will it actually be?
Rumor has it that the new M5 chip will perform up to 25% faster than the current M4 chip, which is a nice upgrade for those of us who have an older MacBook Pro.
Additionally, there are rumors that Apple will add Thunderbolt 5 ports to the entry-level MacBook Pros, allowing the base models to transfer data faster for the first time.
You can already order an M4 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 5 ports, but you need to pay a little more, as it’s only available on the M4 Pro and M4 Max models.
Additionally, there have been rumors and speculation that Apple might feature Wi-Fi 7 on the new MacBook Pro models. While that rumor seems a bit far off at the moment, if Apple does this, the latest MacBook Pro models will be capable of having a stronger and more reliable internet connection. However, you’ll still need the right router for the job.
M5 MacBook Pro: Price and Release Date
As mentioned, the M5 MacBook Pro will launch in 2025, but when will Apple release it?
We don’t have an exact release date yet, but Apple tends to release new MacBooks near the end of the year, a month or two after the iPhone event.
Apple announced its last two MacBook Pro updates in October 2023 and 2024, and we expect the company to do the same this year.
We haven’t heard any rumors that Apple might increase the price this year, so we expect Apple to keep the same as the current-generation models.
The current M4, 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,599 and goes up to $3,199. On the other hand, the 16-inch M4 Macbook Pro starts at $2,499 and goes up to $3,999. So expect to see the same prices when the new MacBook Pros launch.
You Might Want to Skip This Year’s MacBook Pro
This year’s MacBook Pro doesn’t look like a must-have upgrade unless you have a much older MacBook, so you might want to wait for what Apple has in store for us next year.
If the rumors are true, the 2026 MacBook Pro models will be worth waiting for. We’ve already mentioned that next year’s MacBook Pros will feature an OLED display with a higher max brightness, more vibrant colors, and higher contrast ratios, but that’s not all.
Rumors also suggest that the 2026 MacBook Pro will be thinner and lighter than this year’s upcoming models. Additionally, it might feature a punch-hole camera, finally eliminating the annoying notch at the top.
And, of course, it will feature the M6 chip, which will surely be more powerful than the M5 processor we’re expecting this year.
Will You Upgrade or Wait Until Next Year?
It’s worth mentioning that everything we’ve discussed here is purely rumors and speculation. We’ll have to wait for Apple to release the new M5 MacBook Pro models to see what they have in store.
With that said, if you’re not in a hurry waiting for next year’s MacBook Pros might be the best option for you. Even if the rumors aren’t true, users with the M4 MacBook Pro won’t see any significant reason to upgrade this year.
