8+ Things to Know About Apple’s iPhone 14 Lineup

The iPhone 13 was released a little over three months ago, but that hasn't stopped the internet from finding out new things about the next iPhone. There are many rumors and possible leaks about the so-called iPhone 14 or iPhone 13s – we even saw renders of what the 2022 iPhone lineup will (potentially) look like. And if the rumors are true, it's going to be a big year for the iPhone. Of course, it's still too early to know everything about the new iPhone, but continue reading to learn eight+ things we know so far about Apple's iPhone 14.
iPhone 14 Might Lose the Camera Bump
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reported that the iPhone 14 would have a complete redesign in 2022. It partially means the lack of a notch, but it's also because the iPhone 14 is rumored to get rid of the camera bump on the back too. Apple leaker Jon Prosser also said that some iPhone 14 models wouldn't have a camera bump. How will that work?
According to Prosser, Apple will make the iPhone 14 thicker. This is pure speculation, but this could also mean that Apple will have more room to add other features (or even a bigger battery).
Keep in mind that not every iPhone will lose the camera bump, according to Prosser. It's possible that, just like the notch, Apple will only change the camera bump in the Pro models.
iPhone 14 Pro Won't Have a Notch
There are many renders of what the iPhone 14 might look like – and good news: Apple might finally get rid of the notch, which will be more than enough reason for many iPhone users to upgrade. But don't be all that hyped just yet.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will begin getting rid of the notch with the iPhone 14 Pro models, so the regular models might look similar to the current iPhone 13. Instead of a notch, Apple is said to use a hole-punch/pill-shaped camera instead. But Kuo says that this will happen only if Apple's production and prototyping plans don't face any issues.
We'll have to see if Apple finally changes one of the biggest issues people have with the iPhone's looks. Still, that raises the question, what will happen to Face ID?
Will the iPhone 14 Have Face ID or Touch ID?
As you probably already know, the iPhone's notch isn't there just to look pretty (because it doesn't). Instead, the notch hides cameras, sensors, and other types of technology needed to use Face ID. So if Apple gets rid of the notch, what will happen to Face ID?
Well, some rumors say that Apple will go back to Touch ID. But instead of using the power button like on the iPad Air and iPad mini, Apple will use an under-display fingerprint sensor for the first time ever.
And even though that might be awesome, it probably won't happen this year. Kuo reported that Apple had development problems that might force the company to delay the under-display Touch ID until 2023.
Hopefully, Apple will sort these problems out, but we won't know for sure until we hear other reports—or watch Apple's iPhone event.
RIP iPhone mini
The iPhone mini hasn't been the most well-received iPhone this last couple of years. Sadly, for this reason, some rumors say that Apple might get rid of the smaller model in 2022. However, that doesn't mean we'll only see three models this year.
Instead, the iPhone 14 will continue to feature four different models: two regular size iPhones and two Max models: The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are said to feature a similar 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max's display will be 6.7 inches.
If you prefer smaller iPhones, rumors say Apple will also launch a new iPhone SE which will remain as the only small option. It's also worth noting that many rumors also said that Apple wouldn't launch an iPhone 13 mini in 2021, so take the rumor with a grain of salt.
A16 Bionic, 6GB of RAM, ProMotion
Before, it was expected that Apple would use advanced 3-nanometer technology to create the iPhone 14's chip, but that's not expected anymore. Now, it's expected that Apple's partner TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), will create the chip using a 4-nanometer manufacturing process. It's also expected that this will be called the A16 Bionic chip, following the current trend. All four iPhone 14 models are expected to ship with 6GB of RAM and 120Hz ProMotion Displays.
Camera Improvements
Kuo also reports that the iPhone 14 will see some major camera improvements. According to the analyst, Apple will focus on improving the front-facing camera's autofocus. On the back, Kuo says Apple might increase the camera from 12 megapixels to a 48-megapixel (combined) sensor. Additionally, Apple might also upgrade the camera on the iPhone 14 to be able to record videos in 8K, which would be a first.
iPhone 14 Release Date and Pricing
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 in the second half of 2022, which is not that surprising. With the exception of 2020, Apple likes to release the new iPhones around the month of September, so it's highly likely that we'll see the new iPhone by the end of that month. It's also possible that Apple might increase the iPhones' prices. So expect the iPhone 14 to cost $799, iPhone 14 Max $899, iPhone 14 Pro $1099, and iPhone 14 Pro Max $1199.
Will We See a Portless iPhone?
There have been rumors about a completely portless iPhone since the iPhone 12, but Apple hasn't taken the leap just yet. With that said, the rumors still stand. Apple is working on an iPhone with no Lightning port, and it's probably just a matter of time before we see the real deal, especially since Apple's betting heavily on MagSafe on both the iPhone and MacBook. It's possible that we could see a portless iPhone this year. Although very unlikely.
