When iPhone Crash Detection Goes Wrong!

Spoiler alert: This story isn’t about an awesome Apple feature malfunctioning. iPhone’s Crash Detection worked exactly how it was designed. Only, this time, it feels more like a Saturday Night Live skit.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt or even in a crash. However, some Emergency Contacts were rightfully freaked out. Here’s the scoop.
Self-described thrill seeker Micah Crurver was in Medellín, Colombia, when he decided to go paragliding off a mountain overlooking the city. Crurver made the mistake of letting his mother know he was about to jump off a cliff with a parachute in a foreign country. She asked him to call her after. What happened next would horrify anyone.
Crulver’s iPhone fell out of his pocket during the flight and fell to the ground. Uh-oh! Apple’s Crash Detection feature did its job and sent a message to his Emergency Contacts, which happened to be…you guessed it, his mom and another friend. His mother frantically started calling family members and every paragliding company in Colombia, eventually having to use WhatsApp to text them with Google Translate because everyone spoke Spanish. His other Emergency Contact, who just happens to run a disaster relief organization, was packing for Colombia.
Fortunately, Crurver was able to call his mother from a friend’s phone shortly after. According to Curver, “…when she initially picked up the phone from a random number calling her, let’s just say she was…emotionally invested in the moment.” No fooling!
Can you imagine! Cruver eventually shared the story on Instagram, and it’s received nearly 3 million views. You can check it out here.
The takeaway? Apple’s Crash Detection works. This critical safety feature has saved lives, but it’s also not the first time it’s mistakenly reported a crash. Make sure you remember you have it activated so you can immediately call your Emergency Contacts to put them at ease if a similar situation arises. Thankfully, Cruver is alive and well, and his Emergency Contacts have forgiven him for the mishap.
