There’s no question that iOS 18 will be full of awesome features. Apple hopes one of these will solve something that’s been a major problem for a huge portion of iPhone users.
Do you get motion sickness while using your iPhone or iPad as a passenger in a car? According to our poll, about 40% of iPhone users do. This prevents them from using their devices for any extended period of time while riding in a moving vehicle. For some, it only takes a couple of minutes for the nausea to set in.
According to Apple, “…motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using iPhone or iPad while riding in a moving vehicle.” Apple’s solution is called Vehicle Motion Cues.
Vehicle Motion Cues uses sensors on the iPhone and iPad to determine if a vehicle is in motion and activate a series of animated dots that respond to the vehicle’s movements. The feature will be able to be turned on and off via the Control Center.
If a vehicle is accelerating, the dots gently flow down toward the bottom of the screen and change direction if the vehicle is braking. If the vehicle is making a right turn, the dots flow from right to left, and vice versa for a left turn.
Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues are designed to align what you see with what your body feels, minimizing the sensory mismatch that causes discomfort.
Will this work well enough to provide a sense of stability for the user? Time will tell. It has the potential to make travel more productive and enjoyable for millions who suffer from motion sickness, but it has yet to be seen how the feature will work across different apps like games. Still, Vehicle Motion Cues is an innovation that will certainly benefit many.
