Popular Apple TV+ dark comedy series Bad Monkey, starring Vince Vaughn, will return for a second season. While the first season was based on the novel by the same name written by Carl Hiaasen, the second season will not use the second book in the series, Razor Girl, as source material.

Variety reports:

The series originally debuted on Apple’s streaming service back in August with the season finale airing in October. The first season was based on the novel of the same name by Carl Hiaasen. There is a sequel novel to “Bad Monkey” titled “Razor Girl,” but according to an individual with knowledge of the production, Season 2 will not be based on that book. Bill Lawrence developed “Bad Monkey” for television with Vince Vaughn starring in the lead role.

It may be that the series’ producers will base a possible third season on the second book. Co-creator Bill Lawrence has previously hinted at a three-season run for Bad Monkey. Lawrence is also co-creator of two other popular Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso and Shrinking.

All three series have proven quite popular among Apple TV+ viewers, especially when it comes to Ted Lasso, which is arguably the service’s most popular series so far. Ted Lasso ran for three seasons and is expected to return for a fourth.

Shrinking has been a low-key hit, receiving good reviews from critics and viewers. The show has run for two seasons and has been renewed for a third.

The first season of Bad Monkey, which premiered in summer 2024, did quite well, sitting atop the Apple TV+ charts for most of its run.

The series “tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), who has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in. He just needs to get past a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey.”

In addition to Vaughn, Season 1 of Bad Monkey starred L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Guest stars included John Ortiz, Zach Braff, Ashley Nicole Black, Scott Glenn, and Charlotte Lawrence.

“I hope that people know that Carl Hiaasen is an idol of mine and an inspiration for me as a writer,” Lawrence said. “To get to go on telling his story with Vince Vaughn and this great cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting. I’m very thankful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros, as well as the entire team that helps bring this show to life.”

Bill Lawrence serves as showrunner and executive producer on Bad Monkey, in addition to creating the series. Vince Vaughn not only stars in the series, but is also an executive producer. Jeff Ingold and Lisa Katzer of Doozer executive produce the show in cooperation with Matt Tarses and Marcos Siega. Warner Bros. Television is the studio in charge of filming the show.

The release date for season two has not yet been announced.
