Apple is introducing Tap to Cash in its upcoming iOS 18 and watchOS 11 operating systems, which will be released to the public this fall. The new feature allows users to transfer Apple Cash in person by holding an iPhone or Apple Watch close to another iPhone or Apple Watch. Due to this new feature, Apple is making changes to its identity verification rules for Apple Cash.
Apple told customers that as of October 4, iPhone and Apple Watch users will be required to verify their identity to send more than a total of $500 in a peer-to-peer transfer. This includes Apple Cash transfers via the Messages app, as well as Tap to Cash payments. Apple will require the verification whether a user is sending funds from a card in the Wallet app or from an Apple Cash balance. Prior transactions count toward the $500 limit that will trigger the identity verification requirement.
The new requirement will be in addition to the identity verification requirement that is already required for Apple Cash users who use the feature on a frequent basis. An Apple support document says users cannot receive or add $500 or more in total without verifying their identity. This means verification will also be required when sending large amounts of money when the new requirement takes effect in early October.
Apple’s support document also explains how to verify your identification:
