Apple has now confirmed that it will open an Apple Retail Store in downtown Detroit, possibly as early as sometime this summer. The much-rumored store’s opening was confirmed via a hiring notice on the store’s new website.

Apple has yet to post any listings for specific job positions, nor has the Cupertino firm announced the exact location of the new retail store. The webpage for the new store merely says that it is “coming soon.”

As has become traditional with many recent Apple Store openings, the upcoming downtown Detroit features a customized Apple logo. However, unlike the iPhone maker’s new Worldcenter Miami store, the new artwork is not yet available for download for use as wallpaper.

While the location of the new store has not yet been announced, it’s believed that Apple will put the new location in place of two currently empty storefronts located between 1426 and 1434 Woodward Avenue, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

A downtown Detroit Apple Store has long been the subject of speculation, and the new location is seen as a definite win for the downtown area, which has seen several large national retailers come and go in the area over the past decade. A new Apple Retail Store in the area could be a big help in the attempt to revitalize the downtown Detroit area, which has seen an increase in new development in recent years.

The first rumors were voiced by businessman Dan Gilbert in 2015, shortly after moving his mortgage company to inside Detroit city limits from the suburbs. At that time, Gilbert told reporters that “it’s more likely than not” that Detroit would get an Apple Store within five years. So, Gilbert was only off by five years or so.

The new location is a Bedrock-owned building. However, neither Gilbert’s real estate firm nor Apple has yet issued an official announcement about the new store. The new store would be situated between the Shinola boutique hotel and the headquarters of automaker General Motors.

The proposed site of the new Apple Retail location has had renovation signage displayed since June 2024. Gilbert was also involved in setting up an Apple Developer Academy in Detroit back in 2021.

The storefronts previously housed perfume retailer Le Labo, clothing/lifestyle brand Detroit is the New Black, and clothing store Madewell. All three of those stores shut down in 2022.

There are already several Apple Retail Stores in the Detroit area, as well as the rest of the state of Michigan. There are currently six Apple Stores in Michigan, with four locations in southeast Michigan: Somerset Collection in Troy, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township, and Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.

Apple in January opened a new Miami Worldcenter retail store. That store’s rooftop boasts a green space, which is designed to seamlessly blend with the surrounding palm trees and shrubs.

The Miami Worldcenter store features a combined Genius Bar and Apple Pickup area to offer technical support and the collection of online orders in a single location, as well as an Apple Vision Pro demo area.
