Apple is working on a smarter version of Siri that is being referred to internally as “LLM Siri,” reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The improved Siri, which Apple plans to release alongside iOS 19 and macOS 16 in 2025, is intended to better compete with chatbots like ChatGPT by using “advanced large language models.”
From Gurman’s report:
The new Siri, details of which haven’t been reported, uses more advanced large language models, or LLMs, to allow for back-and-forth conversations, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the effort hasn’t been announced. The system also can handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion, they said.Revamping the 13-year-old Siri service is part of Apple’s efforts to become a force in artificial intelligence. The company debuted its much-ballyhooed Apple Intelligence platform last month, but it still lacks many of the features offered by other tech giants.
A new version of Siri could hold ongoing conversations with users, much like ChatGPT. Apple is working to allow customers to have a more natural conversation with the virtual personal assistant, with the aim of having Siri respond more like a human would. Using large language models will also allow Siri to perform more complex tasks, which Apple currently has to rely on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to accomplish in iOS 18.2.
Gurman says that while Apple has been testing the “LLM Siri” software on iPhones, iPads, and Macs as a separate app, the new version will ultimately replace the familiar Siri interface that users currently rely on. His sources told him that the company plans to announce the overhauled version of Siri as soon as 2025, unveiling it alongside the upcoming iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates, which currently carry the internal monikers of “Luck” and “Cheer. “
While the new “LLM Siri” will be announced in 2025, the new features aren’t expected to make an appearance in the first versions of the operating systems. Instead, Apple will roll out the new Siri to users in early 2026. Apple has followed a similar plan with this year’s initial Apple intelligence features. Not all iOS 18 Apple Intelligence features will debut until early next year. We should keep in mind that Apple is still several months from unveiling the plans, so things could change as far as features and release timing are concerned.
The upgraded Siri will use new Apple AI models to interact with users in a more human-like way while also handling tasks more like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The new Siri will also use app intents to provide more precise control of third-party apps on the user’s device. Siri will also be able to use Apple Intelligence features, such as writing and summarizing text.
While Apple develops the new “LLM Siri” technology, it will add ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence in December, and the company plans to offer additional chatbot options, such as Google’s Gemini. Apple wants to upgrade Siri to provide advanced AI capabilities while protecting users’ privacy. However, we may see the company continue offering access to third-party AI systems to provide specialized abilities or information outside of Siri’s wheelhouse.
