Apple’s recent event was certainly not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, however, there were some fun announcements nonetheless. For Apple Watch owners, a new line of woven nylon watch bands were introduced, but the more notable launch was directed at those who have held out on purchasing an Apple Watch. The company finally released a new webpage which lets you fully customize an Apple Watch to your liking.

Previously, there were only a few base options available for purchase on Apple’s website. The lack of a customization option has been curious, especially since the Apple Watch has been pitched as the most personal device Apple has ever released. Of course there have been a plethora of bands available after you buy the watch, but making new Apple Watch owners purchase the band they want separately certainly hasn’t created the best customer experience.

Thankfully, this will no longer be a problem as the new web page allows you to fiddle with every aspect of the watch including all the cases, bands and faces available. Considering the hundreds of variations of the Apple Watch now available, this is a welcomed, albeit long overdue, addition to Apple’s website.

The new customization tool is fairly easy to use. You can simply click, drag or scroll through a horizontal list of available options. You start by selecting the watch casing you prefer. The options available range from the aluminum casing of the Apple Watch Sport, to the stainless steel Apple Watch. The aluminum casing comes in either Silver, Space Gray, Gold or Rose Gold while the stainless steel casing is available in either Silver or Space Gray. Interestingly, the Apple Watch Edition is not available for customization. I assume this has to do with the low sales and niche audience of the Edition model. Once you’ve settled on a casing you simply click it and proceed to the band section.

Selecting a band is a similar process, but the site cleverly fits your selected casing over different styles of bands as you scroll through to give you an idea of what it will look like. This section includes the newly released woven nylon bands as well. This is excellent because you can finally see exactly what your Apple Watch will look like before clicking the order button or making a trip to your local Apple Store.

The last step is to choose a watch face. This option is just so you can see what the different faces look like. You can change between them once you have the watch.

As welcomed as this entire experience is, there is still one massive caveat. Evidently Apple’s mindset was to simply to provide you with a place to view the different Apple Watch variations. In order to purchase the specific watch you’ve customized, you are required to load up the store page and pick all the elements again separately.

You would think an option to add your customized watch straight to a shopping cart is an obvious feature, and I was surprised when I discovered this option isn’t available. Either way, at least Apple is heading in the right direction and making the Apple Watch buying experience a little bit better.
