It comes as little surprise that having the Facebook app installed on your iOS device is a significant drain on its battery life. After all, Facebook has come out and openly admitted, in the past, that the company has employed not so kosher tactics in order to keep its app running in the background, constantly — even when users have arbitrarily gone in and turned off automatic app refresh of their own volition.

Back when that anomaly was taking place, however, Facebook vowed to rectify the issue in a subsequent software update. So it’s only reasonable to assume, I suppose, that everything’s all hunky dory, and the issue has been swept under the rug, right? Well, no, not necessarily …

You see, all it really takes to get to the bottom of an issue like this is to look into it yourself. And fortunately, that’s exactly what Samuel Gibbs of The Guardian has done. He recorded his iPhone 6s Plus’s battery life at the same time every day for a whole week, then, after having removed the app and opting to rely solely on the iOS Safari Browser to get his Facebook fix, he decided to record the same figures according to the same timeframe.

And what he found was, well, quite astonishing, we think. By removing the Facebook app, his iPhone 6s Plus was, on average, able to retain 15% more battery life over the course of a week. In the scientific community, of course, we can never rely on just one incidence such as this — a likely case of random chance alone. So he asked several of his colleagues and friends to do the same thing. And guess what? They ALL reported similar results, too!

Just think about that for a second: by simply removing the Facebook app from your iPhone, you could potentially retain an extra 15% battery life at the end of the day — which is a rather generous amount of extra juice, for what it’s worth.

Another benefit of uninstalling the app: you free up an additional 500 MB of storage on your device, which is enough space to store an extra 50-100 selfies. I mean, come on, right? It should honestly make you wonder why you’re still using the app to begin with at that rate.

Maybe you’re a hard-core Facebook fanatic, though, and having access to the app constantly is a pretty big deal to you? And that’s fine, too. All we’re saying is that it’s pretty clear the Facebook app is draining your battery quicker than you’d like — so uninstalling and relying on the Safari browser, instead, is probably the better way to go if you want to get the most use out of your iOS device without having to worry too much about battery life.
