Woman Drops iPhone 5s out of an Airplane 2,500 Feet Above Ground and It Actually Survived

What’s the worst thing that can happen to a smartphone? Well, being damaged beyond repair, obviously! And one woman in particular experienced a traumatizing scenario with her iPhone 5s that might’ve killed the smartphone for good.
Jeannine Buck from Abbotsford, British Columbia, was taking photos out of an open window in a small Cessna airplane 2,500 feet above Stanley Park in Vancouver, according to Florin T. from Phone Arena. A powerful wind brushed by, knocking the iPhone 5s from her hand, sending it downward in a quick drop. It’s never a happy sight to watch your iPhone fall. Just imagine what Jeannine must have felt watching her phone fall from the plane.
With the help of a friend, Jeannine was actually able to find her phone with the Find My iPhone app. “When she finally found it, she discovered that it was fully functional, with only minor scuffs – no broken screen or anything like that,” Florin writes, adding that a case protected the phone. There are a lot of robust options for iPhone cases, but it looks like Jeannine’s simple case was enough. Florin suggests the phone also might have been saved by the tree branches the phone hit on the way down.
Interestingly, PC Magazine published a story about the iPhone 5s being more durable than the Galaxy S5, where they stated “Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 is more durable than its predecessor and other popular Android handsets, but can’t withstand accidents as well as Apple’s iPhone 5s, according to a new report from mobile insurance provider SquareTrade.”
The findings were based on tests done by SquareTrade, using “size, weight, water resistance, grip-ability, front and back panel design, and edge construction.” The criteria used in the test helped determine how likely the phones were to break in accidents. It seems as if the iPhone 5s is one tough cookie, and we can only assume that the new iPhone SE will hold up just as well.
It was reported that after the incident, Jeannine changed her ringtone to the appropriately titled song “Stayin’ Alive”.
