We’ve heard our fair share of “impending” shifts in Apple’s otherwise predictable device naming structure over the years — most recently, what we now know as the iPhone SE, was originally thought by many to ultimately touch down as the ‘iPhone 5se’.

Now, to a somewhat similar effect, a new rumor out of the Far East has surfaced alleging that Apple’s forthcoming ‘iPhone 7’ will instead be dubbed the ‘iPhone 6SE’. The rumor claims that, without a physically redesigned chassis, this year’s iPhone upgrade won’t be sufficient enough to receive the traditional, year over year, full step up in numbering.

The report goes on to cite sources with deep ties to Apple’s supply chain — who indicated that retail packaging bearing the ‘iPhone 6SE’ moniker has already been produced. We urge you, of course, to take that much with a grain of salt; as without pictures to substantiate those claims, they remain merely claims unverified.

In any event, for those of you who’re familiar with Apple’s existing product naming pattern, the company tends to release significantly redesigned hardware every other year, while intermittent updates are brought during the in-between — err, “s” years.

Considering all that we know about the ‘iPhone 7’ so far, however, with the formal launch looming just over the imminent horizon, it’s been all but confirmed that we’re not going to see a dramatically redesigned iPhone this year — but rather, one that’s actually quite similar to the iPhone 6s we currently have.

Sure, the forthcoming device will be thinner, it’ll feature new, upgraded internals, and perhaps even True Tone display technology. However, above and beyond all that, the impending iPhone should hardly be considered an overhaul.

And so, all that being considered, perhaps it’s not too far fetched to think that Apple might have changed its iPhone name-game up a bit this year?

One thing we know for certain is that the company’s 2017 iPhone is expected to be quite the whopper — boasting a vast and impressive, head-to-toe redesign, boasting technological and material advancements, galore. And so, from that vantage point, would it really make sense for Apple to jump a whole number for the next iPhone — when the next next iPhone is expected to blow even the forthcoming model out of the water?

Maybe.. Maybe not? We’ll go ahead and leave that much up to the minds behind Apple’s wildly successful marketing team. And in the interim, the rest of us will just happily wait for our next iPhone — whatever they end up calling it.

Are you looking forward to Apple’s ‘iPhone 7’ launching this year? What if they do end up calling it the ‘iPhone 6SE’? Let us know what you think in the comments!
