Microsoft has launched a tempting new retail promotion today in the US, giving away free Xbox Ones to students who purchase a Surface Pro 4. Starting today, students who buy a Surface Pro 4 and Xbox One will receive a $300 discount on the total purchase.
This could be a very enticing deal for students with tight budgets who are preparing to enroll in college in the fall, solving their computing and entertainment needs in one fell swoop.
According to The Verge, the combined pair must be purchased in retail stores in order for the $300 discount to take effect. “So basically a free Xbox One with the purchase of a Surface Pro 4,” says Terry Myerson, head of Windows and devices at Microsoft. The promotion is due to run until August 14.
The original Xbox One has, as the discount suggests, been priced down to $299 by Microsoft, in an apparent effort to clear inventory for the newer and sleeker Xbox One S.
The downside to this deal is that you will be purchasing dated hardware. Not only is the Xbox One S due to launch in August, the Surface Pro 4 launched last October and rumors of its successor are already swirling as Microsoft usually releases its Surface Pro devices in the fall.
